How to Use Gratitude for Weight Loss

Using gratitude for weight loss may be just the thing that gets you to stop saying “But I’ve tried everything out there, every diet, every program, every as-seen-on-TV gadget there is and nothing, NOTHING has worked.”

Gratitude might just be your knight in shining armor.

Push your failed attempts to the side and stop using them as an excuse, because no matter how you phrase it, playing the “been there, done that” diva is a super easy way to keep you in the weight loss/gain vortex.

It’s time to dig a little deeper, shift your gears and approach this whole weight loss thing from another, more productive angle. And one that has really cool side effects!

Let me first clarify that by using gratitude I’m not asking for you to sit there and repeat in a meditative state that you miraculously have love for your muffin top (OM…. muffin top… you make me feel so sexy and alive!), or that the 30 pounds of excess weight you’re carrying you must adore and thank the ever-loving stars for its existence around your belly.

Helllllllll no! I do not think you should trick yourself into thinking that the weight is fine as long as you’re a happy camper. Excess weight, particularly around the mid-section, has been linked to stroke, heart disease, cancer, stress, diabetes… it’s simply no good for you.

How to use gratitude to lose weight is simple (and effective), and it doesn’t require you to go out and buy any fancy equipment, or sign up for a pack of class passes (that usually expire anyway, am I right?!? All gung-ho after a Barre class — one month later not so jazzed anymore. Heard it a million times.)

This method, if employed on a consistent basis, will have you losing weight and feeling blessed, awesome, amazing, doing your happy dance, feeling whatever happy emotion there is that you can feel, and it will seem effortless (except for the times you’re doing the actual work, like moving your body, shifting your mindset, creating your vision... good things like that!) To lose a lot of weight there is going to be work involved, but if this scares you and has you saying ‘Oh this is going to be so hard, I‘m not strong enough’ then sister, this is the right path for you! You need to shift your focus and gratitude helps you do just that.

I always like to lay things out into a process which helps make it easier to follow, allowing you to have more energy to do the heavy lifting, which is creating the shift that will ultimately create the change in your waist circumference.

Gratitude has so much to offer you. Gratitude gets you out of your head and into the world around you. It stops the inner critic (or inner a-hole as I sometimes refer to it) from lamb-basting you about how disgusted you are at yourself. When your inner critic gets going, it’s difficult to slow its roll on your self-esteem.

Gratitude, on the other hand, is love, and love is the only thing that can help slow that inner critic down. LOVE baby! When you’re in the mindset of love, you simply cannot talk yourself down. Your inner critic is silenced. Notice how that feels!

When you’re going at anything with a powerful mindset, an outlook on life that radiates with gratitude, and a laser-focused desire to feel a certain way, you can’t help but make positive changes.

Here is how I break down what I’ve learned to do over the years, and let me tell you, this simple process has helped me tremendously! To look at myself and my life five years ago to now… this girl is on fire!

This is what I do every morning to get things going in the right direction. (Granted, as a mom of two young boys, there maaaay be a morning or two that slips by, but I don’t let that derail me. Using gratitude no matter what time of day it is is always helpful!)

  1. Before you get out of bed in the mornings, get your head on straight by not thinking of all that you have to do, but of how you want to feel during the day. Set the thinking into motion (which triggers the feelings, which in turn trigger the experiences. It’s all interconnected!) Say to yourself, or out loud, or write it on a notepad how you want to feel during the day. Give yourself three positive feelings. It may be fulfilled… joyful… vibrant.
  2. Next, think of three things you are grateful for. It could be ANYTHING! The air you breathe, the warmth of the sun you will feel on your skin, the smile on your child’s face, the amazing day that is before you… and feel those emotions as you think, say or write them down. FEEL it. Let it wash over you. Soak it up, baby.
  3. Lastly, list three things you’re going to accomplish today that are going to set you on the path to losing weight. It could be cooking dinner at home. Setting the timer on your phone so that during the day you can be reminded of how you want to feel today, and sit for 1 minute after a reminder dings so you can refocus your attention to those emotions. Commit to changing a negative thought into a positive one when one arises. Use gratitude to change your emotional state when you’re feeling a moment of depression coming on.
Keep these things focusing on the positives though, don’t list three things you don’t want to happen. Keep the energy flowing toward the good!

This should take you about as long as it takes for you to shower in the morning, so you have the time for it and I promise you, if you stick with it, really put your mind into it, it will set you up for such success you’ll feel amazing, the weight will begin to come off and things will not seem to be such a struggle anymore.

Always keep gratitude in your pocket and use it when you’re feeling like you’re heading down the road of negative self-talk. It will get you out of your head and into the world around you. When you’re not in your head, it’s amazing what you can see!

I hope this process has sparked a fire within you, that gives you hope and the power to realize that while you’re weight won’t come off overnight, the shift to create that change can begin immediately! You’re more powerful than you give yourself credit for.. believe it, and you’ll see it!

and you think this process can help a friend, then please share, and don’t forget to clap it up!! Every clap I truly appreciate :)
