How To Get Better At Anything

It’s a small investment with a huge ROI

We all have goals or an idea of the sort of life we’d like to be living but for one reason or another, our current life and habits are getting in the way. We know what we’d like to see happen, and it can be a crystal clear vision or a rather vague and obscure notion. Either way, it’s there and it’s worth your time to invest in the changes you’d like to see happen.

But how?

Whatever you’re working towards, you need to set a goal (yes, a goal for your goal!) of giving it a good, solid 10 minutes a day.

10 minutes. That’s it. It’s small enough to easily fit into your day, every single day. It’s also large enough to make a difference. A big difference.

Here’s how to find your 10 minutes

In the evening, instead of sitting on the sofa and binge-watching, actively do something with those 10 minutes. Heck, you can even multitask if appropriate. Keep the tv on while you do your squats, lunges, crunches, and planks if you want to begin a daily exercise routine.

I know a lot of people who want to connect more to their intuition, or simply take a few moments to practice being more mindful so as to not feel like they’re always rushing around. A simple solution is to get up 10 minutes earlier in the morning and meditate. Having those peaceful moments before the house comes alive with activity is worth it in more ways than you can imagine. (Trust me on this! I do my best to get up an hour before my kids and it’s become sacred to me.)

Ease your overwhelm by taking 10 minutes to set your intention for the day. This can create peace of mind and allow for events that would normally get your panties in a wad to instead roll off with a lot less emotional turmoil.

Has eating healthy eluded you for years? Plan your meals for the day by taking 10 minutes in the morning to strategize your grocery store trip. This almost guarantees you not showing up in the chips aisle with a bad case of hangry!

Been wanting to learn a new language (because you’re tired of being thought of as a lazy American who only knows one language— I could be talking to myself here). Take 10 minutes a day and jump on Duolingo to learn that new language.

Have you been meaning to connect more with your children, to create lasting memories and create special moments with them? Sit down for 10 minutes with them (and yes, if you have more than one, that would be 10 minutes with each kid so they can have your full attention) and play a game. Talk about life. Go for a walk. Make them feel special!

What does all this give you?

At the very least, 10 minutes a day gives you 70 minutes a week that you devote to learning, creating memories, increasing productivity, exercising, eating better, or improving any area of your life that you want to see improve.

I dare to say, 70 minutes is a heck of a lot better than your initial investment of zero minutes. In my book, that’s a huge win.

Take action now!

I have a challenge for you that will help you to put this idea into motion.

My challenge to you is:

Step 1: Write down a goal you’ve had for yourself for a long time but one that you never gave the time of day.

Step 2: For the next 7 days, commit 10 minutes each day to one small thing that will get you closer to achieving that goal. Take action.

10 minutes is manageable without being overwhelming.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself

You may begin to think that Well if I can do 10 minutes, then I should really be doing 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Then I’d really be getting somewhere.

I agree, but that’s not the key point for now.

The key is to simply get started. And 10 minutes is the perfect starting point. Stick with that number for a bit, so it becomes habitual. Once you’re getting in your 10 minutes without it creating stress, then you can think about adding on from there if it feels right. Otherwise, let there be no shame to your 10-minute game! It can be life-changing.
