Striking a Balance Between Seriousness and Silliness

It’s easy to get caught up in life when we forget to laugh.

Laughter is good for the soul. A good hearty belly laugh, the kind that has your eyes tearing, your stomach aching, and your body falling over to the side because you can no longer hold your composure — that’s good for the soul.

When’s the last time you did that?

Life is unpredictable, but we have to do our best to maintain the balancing act, otherwise, we become too rigid when life requires us to be fluid, to roll with the punches as best we can.

Laughter helps tip the scales back to neutral. When you laugh, you can’t worry. Stress, anger, and depression cannot co-exist with laughter. It’s a pressure valve you can open at any time to release steam.

It’s been said time and time again that laughter is the best medicine and exercise is the magic pill. Both provide a healthy dose of endorphins and serotonin — the feel-good hormone that honestly I don’t think enough of us get daily… except for my youngest son. He always has a smile on his face and something to laugh about. Sometimes I secretly wish I was him! How great it would be to go through life like that. Some people just have that advantage and others, like me, have to work very hard at it.

There’s no downside to bringing more lightheartedness into your day. Laughter is the simplest, easiest and cheapest form of therapy that improves your mood, reduce sstress, and gives you a good ab workout — or bout of stomach cramps — from laughing too hard.

This is exactly why Day 2 of the Unapologetically You challenge is about laughter, about balancing out the seriousness with the silliness.

It’s a tool we can use when we’ve lingered in our heads a little too long. Self-discipline (hello Day 1!) is important to keep you focused and working every day on living more consciously, and away from an auto-pilot existence, but it’s also important to remember to be playful, to laugh, and to make other people laugh. (The best kind is when you make someone laugh so hard, that their own laughing, for some reason, makes you laugh. Contagious laughing — I don’t think there’s anything better!)

Let today be the day we go in search of laughter. Let’s be funny, silly, and child-like, even for a moment — and then you can get back to work, most likely with a slightly clearer and happier mindset.
